China claims that its huge “Sky Eye” telescope has picked up signals from a very distant extraterrestrial civilization. The Chinese released a report on contact with so-called aliens, but later deleted it, writes LiveScience.
Astronomers at Beijing University say they have discovered “several cases of possible traces of technology and extraterrestrial civilizations” in a report published Tuesday in the Science and Technology Daily, the official publication of the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology.
The signals were picked up by China’s FAST telescope, nicknamed the Sky Eye, the world’s largest radio telescope. Sky Eye was used to search for radio signals that could indicate the existence of extraterrestrial life in 2019.
In 2020, the Chinese searched the data and discovered two radio signals that could have been artificial. Then, in 2022, another bizarre signal was discovered through research on exoplanets.
Narrowband signals are usually used only by airplanes and satellites, which could have suggested that the waves discovered by the Chinese are produced by extraterrestrial technology.
“These are several electromagnetic signals different from those discovered in the past, and the team is now trying to investigate them,” said Zhang Tonjie, head of the Alien Civilizations Research Group at Beijing University.
“The possibility of suspicious signals being some kind of radio interference is very high, but it needs to be investigated and confirmed. It will be a long process. “
Following the publication of this report, it quickly spread on the Chinese social network Weibo, from where it was quoted by several state media publications. The reasons why the report was then deleted everywhere remain unclear.
Other waves and similar signals fascinated astronomers
It’s not the first time that space signals and radio have stunned researchers – in August 1977, a SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) search conducted at Ohio State University using the Big Ear Telescope caught an incredibly strong signal on frequencies that scientists suspected could come from extraterrestrial sources.
Subsequent searches in the same area of outer space have yielded no further results, and further research has suggested that the signal most likely came from a star in the constellation Sagittarius. Its source, however, remains a mystery.
Chinese astronomers want to quickly rule out possible radio interference from Earth, precisely because they have led other researchers to “hunt” aliens in error in the past.
In 2019, astronomers discovered a signal coming from Earth from the Proxima Centauri system, the closest stellar system to the Sun, about 4.2 light-years away and believed to have at least one habitable planet.
The signal was narrow-banded, usually associated with man-made artificial objects, which led researchers to enthusiastically believe that it was extraterrestrial technology.
New research made public two years later, however, suggested that a faulty device was the source of the signal.
Researcher: The Chinese signal came, most likely from a man-made device
Dan Werthimer, a SETI researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, a co-author of the research project that initially discovered the signals, says that these narrowband waves are most likely “radio interference from Earth with no extraterrestrial origin.” all quoted by LiveScience.
Despite the increased likelihood of such signals and where they come from on Earth, SETI astronomers remain confident that humanity is not alone in the universe, and that one day researchers will discover tangible evidence of extraterrestrial life.
“I think it would be extremely strange to be alone in the universe. If we look at the numbers – we have a trillion planets in our galaxy alone – five times more planets than stars.
Many of them are earth-like planets. Many of them have liquid water, so intelligent life, although it may not be as widespread as microbial life, may still be relatively common, ”Werthimer added.
“Maybe they don’t want to interfere with primitive civilizations like ours, where members are still attacking and killing each other. Maybe they’re keeping us in a huge zoo looking at us. Or maybe they are bored with technology and development and are more interested in music and poetry “, concluded the researcher.
