Another Eurovision scandal: Ukraine is outraged that it will not host next year's contest

Ukraine’s dream of hosting the Eurovision Song Contest in 2023 is fading. The organizers of the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) have announced that, given Russia’s ongoing war, the event will have to be held in another country.

Following the victory of the Kalush Orchestra in Turin, the European Broadcasting Union turned to the Ukrainian public broadcaster AU: Pbc (which had previously organized the event in 2017 and 2005). “In view of the ongoing war, the EBU has taken the time to conduct a full assessment and feasibility study with AU: PBC and third-party specialists, including on security issues. The Eurovision Song Contest is one of the most complex television productions in the world, with thousands of people working and participating in the event and it takes 12 months of preparation time, “the EBU said in a statement.

“Following an objective analysis, the ESC Board of Directors concluded with deep regret that, given the current circumstances, the security and operational safeguards required of a broadcaster to host, organize and produce the Eurovision Song Contest in accordance with Esc rules cannot be met by the AU: Pbc ”.

The decision was challenged by the minister and the band leader

A decision that was immediately challenged by Kyiv Culture Minister Oleksandr Tkachenko and Kalush Orchestra leader Oleh Psiuk, who signed a joint statement claiming that they had not been consulted: “Ukraine does not agree with the nature of the decision. choice in front of which we woke up, without the opportunity to discuss other options. We strongly believe that we have every reason to continue negotiations, to find a common solution that satisfies all parties. We won Eurovision 2022 and met all the conditions in time for the approval process to take place in Ukraine. We have provided answers and guarantees regarding safety standards and possible venues for the competition. The organization of Eurovision 2023 in Ukraine is a strong signal for the whole world that Ukraine is now supporting. We will demand that this decision be changed. ” It is difficult for the EBU to reconsider its decision.

In Turin, the Englishman Sam Ryder finished in 2nd place

The favorite to host the event is the United Kingdom, which closed the 2nd edition in Turin with Sam Ryder. “In accordance with the rules and to ensure the continuity of the event, the EBU will now start talks with the BBC, as this year’s runner-up, to be able to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in the UK. Our full intention is for Ukraine’s victory to be reflected in next year’s performances. This will be a priority for us in our discussions with potential hosts. ”

Ukrainian President Zelensky had expressed confidence that he could even host the show in Mariupol, one of the cities most affected by the ongoing conflict.
