Healthcare Trends. The pancreas and colon, under control. When is colorectal screening recommended?

Unhealthy eating, fast food, drastic diets and other unhealthy eating habits, plus smoking, make us sick slowly and surely.

In Romania, the number of patients with inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease has increased, especially among young people. Diseases can be avoided by avoiding processed foods and smoking, says Prof. univ. and primary physician of Gastroenterology Andrada Seicean, from the Institute of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Cluj-Napoca.

Andrada Seicean is the guest of Healthcare Trends on Friday, a weekly show on medical topics made by MEDIAFAX in partnership with Banca Transilvania – Division for doctors.

What categories of patients should go to preventive control

The category of patients with diabetes, with a family history of pancreatic cancer, those with genetic symptoms must necessarily do prevention. Then there are patients who have intestinal transit disorders, abdominal pain, swallowing problems (dysphagia), jaundice or unexplained weight loss.

The doctor says that patients should focus on prevention: colorectal cancer screening and then a follow-up visit if there are symptoms.

The most common interventions involve colonoscopy, and bilio-pancreatic pathology, a difficult field in digestive pathology, the guest says.

Pancreatic cancer

People eat few fruits and vegetables, but they can reduce the risk of colon cancer. Consumption of sausages, red meat, fat are what contribute to this risk, explains the guest. At the same time, high alcohol consumption can lead to esophageal and ENT cancers. Then smoking increases the risk of pancreatic and gastric cancer.

Prevention is vital especially in patients with genetic syndromes, those with a history of pancreatitis or pancreatic cancer in the family, but also those with diabetes (any diabetes that occurs after the age of 50 should be investigated by imaging, recommended abdominal MRI with contrast agent).
