Former United States President Donald Trump is accused in Congress of orchestrating “an attemptcoup d’etat“By the Capitol assault,” the BBC reports. This is the first investigation into the events of January 6, 2021, when Trump supporters, instigated by the president, attacked the Capitol, where the procedure for validating Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election was taking place.
Liz Cheney, the deputy chairwoman of the committee investigating Trump, a Republican, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, said the former chairman “he turned on the wick this attack”. Cheney is a well-known opponent of Trump and was among the members of the Republican Congress who voted for the indictment, after the events of January 6.
After almost a year of investigations, the House of Representatives, controlled by a Democratic majority, opened the committee on Thursday night.
“January 6 was the culmination of a coup attempt,” said Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson. “Donald Trump was at the center of this plot,” he added.
For nearly a year, this group of elected officials – seven Democrats and two Republicans – heard more than 1,000 witnesses, including two children of the former president, and went through 140,000 documents to shed light on Donald’s precise actions and gestures. Trump before, during and after this event that shook the foundations of American democracy.
Earlier, the House of Representatives indicted Donald Trump for his role in the January 6 bloody attack, but the Republican-controlled Senate of Mitch McConnell acquitted him, arguing that he was no longer in office.
Trump called for Mike Pence to be hanged
To back up its findings, the commission released images of the January 6 violence, as thousands of Donald Trump supporters rallied in Washington to denounce the result of the 2020 election lost by their idol.
These videos show crowds of people attacking the congressional headquarters, demanding the “hanging” of Vice President Mike Pence, and a protester reading Donald Trump’s Twitter messages over the megaphone.
“It was by no means a tourist visit to the Capitol,” said Bennie Thompson.
The images were broadcast live on many news channels, but avoided the most conservative media, a new illustration of the deep political divisions in the United States.
Because a year and a half after the Capitol Assault, millions of supporters of Donald Trump remain firmly convinced that the 2020 election has been marred by fraud. And this despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
But most Republicans reject the commission’s activities, with House Conservative leader Kevin McCarthy denouncing the commission as “the most political and less legitimate in U.S. history.”
His party has already promised to bury the commission if it takes control of the House following the midterm legislative elections in November.
“The day will come when Donald Trump will leave, but your disgrace will remain,” Liz Cheney criticized her Republican colleagues.
