The European Commission is asking WhatsApp to better inform consumers

According to an EC statement, the Consumer Protection Cooperation Network (CCP) and the European Commission have sent a new letter to WhatsApp calling on it to take action to address remaining concerns regarding updates to its terms. service delivery and privacy policy and clearly inform consumers about their business model.

EC representatives point out that WhatsApp is invited to indicate how it intends to communicate any future updates to its terms of use and to do so so that consumers can easily understand the implications of such updates and freely decide whether they wish to do so. to continue using WhatsApp after these updates.

The company is also asked to clarify whether it earns revenue from commercial data user policies.

“WhatsApp needs to make sure that users understand what they accept and how their personal data is used for business purposes, especially to provide services to business partners. I still expect WhatsApp to fully comply with EU rules that protect consumers and their fundamental rights, “said Didier Reynders, Commissioner for Justice.

According to the EC, a first letter to the company was sent in January 2022, as several updates to the terms of use made in 2021 were problematic for consumers. In response, WhatsApp has shown that it has provided users with the necessary information about such updates, including through in-app notifications or support.

“However, the information is provided by WhatsApp in an insistent way and is considered insufficient and confusing for the users. WhatsApp now has a month to prove to consumer protection authorities that its practices comply with EU consumer protection law, “the EC statement said.
