Lawyers for more than 90 women and girls who have been sexually abused by former US gymnast doctor Larry Nassar are demanding more than $ 1 billion in total compensation from the FBI. The young women, including Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, say investigators could have stopped Nassar’s abuse and saved many more victims if they had investigated the case correctly, CNN reports.
The applicants also include gymnasts Aly Raisman, McKayla Marone and Maggie Nichols. Each of them demanded $ 50 million in compensation, as did Biles, according to the law firm that represents them.
Gymnasts Kaylee Lorincz and Hannah Morrow are asking for $ 42.5 million each, and most of the 90 women are asking for $ 10 million each, according to lawyers. In total, the amount would be between 1 and 1.2 billion dollars.
CNN contacted the Justice Department, which oversees the FBI, but officials declined to comment.
Under U.S. law, plaintiffs must notify the federal agency before filing a lawsuit. The Agency has six months to either reach an agreement or reject the request. Only then can a lawsuit be opened if no agreement is reached.
The athletes’ lawyers say that the FBI received credible complaints from many victims until July 2015, but did not investigate the case properly.
“FBI officials, who were able to put an end to Nassar’s abuse, neglected their duties, which led to the sexual assault of about 100 young women between July 28, 2015 and September 12, 2016, and helped to cover up the abuse.” is shown in the complaint.
Lawyers say the FBI didn’t even talk to the girls who were willing to report the doctor’s assaults.
“The FBI knew that Larry Nassar was a child danger when his abuse was first reported to me in September 2015. For 421 days, they worked with the Gymnastics Federation to hide this information from the public. allowed Nassar to continue molesting young women. It’s time for the FBI to be held accountable, “said Maggie Nichols.
“I blame Larry Nassar and I blame the whole system for allowing the abuse to continue. If you allow a predator to harm children, the consequences will be quick and severe. How much is a girl worth? ”Simone Biles said during a hearing in the US Congress last year.
Former sports doctor Larry Nassar will end his days in prison, receiving a 175-year sentence for assaulting more than 100 young gymnasts, anonymous or Olympic champions, in the biggest scandal in the history of American sport.
The lawsuits filed against Nassar, 54, shook the world of gymnastics and sports, leading to the departure of several federation officials, who allowed him to abuse the young gymnasts for so long, despite numerous complaints.
Lassar Nassar worked for the American Gymnastics Federation, the Olympic Committee (USOC) and Michigan State University from 1994-2016.
